BARD or Vertex AI

I am new to Gen AI.

What is the difference between using BARD API and Vertex AI? If the former is already able to perform various tasks, why is there a need to use Vertex to build?

Also, I see some stuff about code connections calling API with python inside Vertex, sometimes I see users using merely json format code into BARD without the API call, I am confused.

If anyone could explain, greatly appreciated. Thank you.
