Question Regarding API Usage for Gemini Integration

Hello,

I would like to ask if our company wants to integrate Gemini with every device we sell, should we apply for a single API and increase its rate limit, or should we register a separate API for each device?

Additionally, does Gemini provide relevant interfaces to support such device-level integration? If so, could you please share the related documentation or examples?

Thank you for your help!

Hi @MartinYun,

Welcome to Google Cloud Community!

Separate API keys for each device are generally recommended. This approach offers better security, granular usage tracking, and improved scalability, despite being more complex to manage. A single API key is easier to manage initially, but it introduces security risks and makes it difficult to track device-specific usage.

And for your question if Gemini supports device-level integration, the answer is yes. It provides:

  • A REST API which is ideal for interacting with the model from different devices. Devices can send text and image prompts to the API and receive responses back.
  • Client libraries in multiple languages (like Python, Java, etc.) for easier interaction with Gemini API. These libraries provide a higher-level interface to interact with the REST API.
  • Standard OAuth 2.0 for authentication and authorization. Each device will need credentials to use the API, and using unique keys facilitates the management process.
  • API Rate Limiting: Gemini uses rate limiting to protect its infrastructure. When using separate API keys, you will have much greater control of the rate limits of individual devices.

Hello,

Thank you for your previous response!

We are an enterprise-level user, and our company produces thousands of devices. Based on your suggestion of using separate API keys for each device, I would like to ask:

  1. How can we efficiently create and manage unique API keys for thousands of devices? Are there tools or bulk management processes available to handle this scale?

  2. How can we ensure the confidentiality of each device's API key to prevent exposure or misuse? Do you have recommendations or best practices (e.g., implementation examples or security configurations) to securely store and protect the API keys on devices?

  3. To streamline the process, does Google provide scripts, automated workflows, or related documentation to help implement API key distribution and secure management in large-scale deployments?

We are trying to implement this securely and efficiently, so any additional guidance or examples regarding device-level integration at this scale would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance!
