Ask Me Anything: How to Optimize Cloud Costs

Published on ‎04-11-2022 02:14 PM by Community Manager | Updated on ‎04-11-2022 02:21 PM

Whether you’re an early-stage startup or a large enterprise with a global footprint, everyone wants to be smart with their money. In our experience working side by side with our customers, there are several principles that organizations, no matter the size, can follow to make sure they’re getting the most out of the cloud.

In this month’s Architecture Framework Ask Me Anything session, our experts will explain these principles, and provide tactical recommendations and service-specific steps to optimize your Google Cloud compute, storage, and networking costs. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask the experts questions and receive answers live.

Save your spot by selecting the "Yes" button on the right, and ask your questions in advance by posting a comment below.

With this series of Ask Me Anything events, it's our goal to provide a trusted space where you can receive support and guidance along your cloud journey. We hope to see you there!

Thanks for organizing this, looking forward to this session. Would you be also covering about cost optimization with GKE clusters using the metering dataset?

Hi~

1. HTTP load balancer "outbound" data processing will be charged from October 1. But we didn't see HTTP load balancer "inbound" data processing now.

So inbound and outbound will be charged at the same time?

2. Can you explain more about Http load balancer data process charge

(1) Inbound data process.

Does it mean the data amount of requests to HTTP load balancer IP?

Can I see the inbound data process metric with Cloud Monitoring?

(2) Outbound data process.

Does it mean the data amount of responses from HTTP load balancer IP?

Can I see the outbound data process metric with Cloud Monitoring?

Thank you.

Hi Lauren !

Looking forward for this session.

We'd love to understand how CUDs for GPUs should be handled in GKE multi AZ environment

A couple of general topic are:

- Best practices for handling CUDs across the organization's projects
- Best practices for purchasing GPUs commitments, and handling dynamically shifting of workloads between AZs reservations wise

We would like to specifically understand more about A2 CUDs on GKE, for example:

- How should a commitment should be purchased ? GPUs / CPUs / RAM as single block, or seperate into different components ?
- Should the commitments be broken up to pieces, or can a big one serve multilpe VMs and how ?
- Can A2 commitments be used without reservations, or are they required ?

Aprreciate it,
Elad.

Any FinOps / cost optimization related to AWS or azure takeout?  How does one take their AWS or azure bill and easily build a cost comparison for savings?  Does GCP have a hidden and magical tool beside cost calculator?

Hi there,

It isn't hidden, and it's indeed magical.

On GCP you can define alerts, as well as budget limits and much more. Explore it by starting your own GCP free trail with ~$300 for 90 days, if I am not mistaken.

When you will click "Budget" on your GCP could console, pay attention to your notification bar that will guide you through it.

Another option is to go into Qwiklabs and experience it through a real time lab.

Enjoy!
