Google Chat API - DM a user

I am trying to use the google chat API to DM to a person. Is this possible? 
I know their email id within our organization and I want to push notification/message as a DM.
Any help/tips/suggestions is appreciated.

I can't find a way in the API documentation to DM someone without an existing space.

The API does not yet support sending DMs between two human users.
