Would it be better to use Cloud Trace or integrate with Istio on my GKE Cluster?

It would be good to have more details on your requirements for application latency tracking, to suggest the appropriate tool. Regardless, Cloud Trace is able to measure application latency for GKE clusters; you could follow the quickstart, and see if any questions arise.

We had a requirement to set up A/B testing on the microservices being developed on our cluster, so we are working on setting up Istio on the cluster for that, plus the client wanted metrics for some of the APIs so I had read that Istio does offer tracing requests, but I am still not sure on how that is implemented exactly. We are using GKE Standard, but it seems we are going to go with the approach we are more familiar with at least as a team, which was Cloud Trace.
