So I set up server-side tagging with App Engine (Google Cloud Platform).
I came across this article "Load Google scripts through server-side tagging" (https://developers.google.com/tag-platform/tag-manager/server-side/dependency-serving?tag=gtm) and followed all the steps.
It looked perfectly fine.
But when I checked the requests in the Google Cloud Console in detail, I noticed that there are a lot of 4XX errors.

This also led to a traffic drop in GA4:

On Jan 5 we changed the GTM integration back to normal, so we switched from example.tagging.com to googletagmanager.com.
Suddenly, most of the 4XX errors were gone, please see the screenshot attached:

As a result, the GA4 traffic is going back to normal:
