Backup and restore options for SQL server on VM ?

I am trying to install and backup/restore SQL DB on a VM ( not cloud sql ) in GCP and not been successful in finding documentation or steps to do the same ? As part of backup - is there an option to take complete snapshot of the entire VM and restore only specific database from the backed up VM snapshot ?

We are specifically looking for installing sql server on VM ( IaaS) so that we have control on the infra ( OS ) as well .
