I have around 40T data on google drive, and I want to transfer them to google cloud bucket. I knew there is no fee for an egress network from google drive to google cloud bucket once the regions are the same. But I checked the region of my files in google drive, and it was unspecified. So I want to ensure that I pay the fees for cloud storage, not the data movement cost from an unspecified region to north America-northeast1 (Montreal).
Hi @aameli1376,
Welcome to Google Cloud Community!
If the region of your files in Google Drive is unspecified, it means that they are stored in Google's global infrastructure, which is spread across multiple regions and zones worldwide. Therefore, if you transfer data from Google Drive to a Google Cloud Storage bucket in a specific region, you will incur egress charges for transferring data from Google's global infrastructure to a specific region.
In general, the cost of data transfer from Google Drive to Google Cloud Storage depends on several factors, including the amount of data being transferred, the location of the Google Cloud Storage bucket, and the network configuration. You can use the Google Cloud Platform pricing calculator to estimate the cost of transferring your data from Google Drive to Google Cloud Storage.
To minimize the cost of data transfer, you can consider the following options:
Store your data in a Google Drive folder that's in the same region as your Google Cloud Storage bucket. This will allow you to transfer data between the two services without incurring any egress charges.
If your data is not time-sensitive, you can use Google's Transfer Appliance service to physically ship your data to Google for upload to your Google Cloud Storage bucket.
If your data is time-sensitive, you can use Google's Cloud Storage Transfer Service to schedule transfers during off-peak hours when network costs are lower.
In summary, the cost of transferring data from Google Drive to Google Cloud Storage depends on several factors, and you can use the Google Cloud Platform pricing calculator to estimate the cost. To minimize the cost, consider storing your data in a Google Drive folder in the same region as your Google Cloud Storage bucket or using Google's Transfer Appliance or Cloud Storage Transfer Service.
Thanks
Hi Christianpaula. Thanks for your reply. So, in the price calculator, I cannot find any suitable option for calculating data movement cost from google drive to google cloud bucket. Can you explain which tab from the google price calculator I should choose?
Is there any way that I can set a region for my data in google drive?
