Programmable search GUI yields different results to custom search API

I've set up a programmable search engine in the console, and have then used it to power the customsearch API. Problem is, the results are entirely different on the API to those shown in the programmable search engine public url/gui. Any idea why this would be?

E.g. for the query 'cems entrepreneurs linkedin'

https://customsearch.googleapis.com/customsearch/v1?q=cems%20entrepreneurs%20linkedin&cx=f5ea3bc72da...

yields entirely different results to searching "cems entrepreneurs linkedin" on https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=f5ea3bc72da244bdc
