GKE Standard with local SSD node pool (autoscaling enabled) does not support ephemeral-storage

I have a GKE standard cluster (GKE 1.22) with an autoscaling node pool, this node pool has a local SSD attached.  I'd like to provision an `emptyDir` volume on the local SSD and I request it by using an ephemeral-storage resource request (see below).  GKE does not seem to be adding the local SSD to the node pool's available resources, when I describe the node the available resources do not include the local SSD available storage.  Is this expected, based on the docs the feature is in beta, but the gcloud commands that are listed in the docs are not accurate as of Oct 2022 with the latest gcloud, the commands fail due to incorrect arguments (they've been renamed in newer versions).
