Backup and DR (disaster recovery) queries

I have few querie s regarding backup,

1- Backup and DR (disaster recovery) creating a New VM instance when enabling Management console, is it an expected behavior ? I tried to give appliance name while enabing the DR nad backup console and it created a new VM , It was not showing any existing vm to select  ? and what it if i delete this VM?

2- backup AND  DR uses disk snapshot for backup VM instances, is it complete VM backup (with os disk , boot loader and datadisk) or just datadisk backup? This can also be done using disk snapshot option? so why should be use backup and DR (if we are not interested in backup console for tracking and monitoring)?  i tried to check documentation but it was a bit complex

3- During restore of the backup - Do we need to restore each disk backup one by one and then create a new instance? or it will add all the disk and os restore at the same time?
Because Machine backup is taking all the backup at the same time so Found it more good option for backup .  Please provide your thoughts on this as I am finding Machine Backup more easy for automation code purpose also.

4- Which one is more costly (considering we have 1 TB).

Snapshot,

Machine Image

Hello @gcloudLearning,

Welcome to Google Cloud Community!

1. If you were referring to the process of recovering your Compute Engine instance when mounting your GCE instance, you cannot use the same Instance Name in the same project. If you mount it to a different project with the same name, it will appear on the list of your instances once you confirm from the job monitor that the mount job has completed.

2. This is how Backup and DR works

Backup and DR Service stores backup data in its original, application-readable format, resulting in many workloads being made available directly from long-term backup storage with no need for time-consuming data movement or translation.

After an initial full backup is performed, your data (general applications, VMware VMs, Compute Engine VMs, databases, and file systems) is backed up incrementally, updating and storing any data that has changed since the last backup.

All backups are executed on a backup/recovery appliance that can be located in the same region and zone as the workload. The backup/recovery appliances are managed using the Backup and DR management console, which uses object and job metadata provided by the backup/recovery appliance to give you a holistic view of your backups across multiple workloads and simplifying management of your data protection plans and stored data.

3. You may use Overview of Google Cloud Backup and DR Service to give you an overview on how to restore your backup using Backup and DR.
