Upgrade SQL Server 2017 Web Edition to Enterprise Edition inside Compute Engine

Hi All

I have instances VM on GCP that running SQL Server 2017 Web Edition at Windows Server 2019 Data Center, build with Public Images. Right now I have a plan to upgrade those SQL Server 2017 Web edition to SQL Server 2017 Enterprise Edition.  How is the step to do that  ? Is just bought from Marketplace ?

Thankyou

Hi @nugnc,

Welcome to the Google Cloud Community!

Before initiating the upgrade process for your VMs, it's crucial to ensure you have created a backup of your VMs.

Upgrading your existing SQL Server version through the Google Cloud Marketplace might not be feasible, as it primarily offers click-to-deploy solutions. According to Microsoft's official documentation - SQL Server 2017 (14.x) Edition Upgrade, transitioning from the SQL Server 2017 Web Edition to the SQL Server 2017 Enterprise Edition is indeed supported and possible.

For a detailed guide on how to proceed with the upgrade, you can follow the steps outlined in Microsoft's documentation here - Upgrade to a different edition of SQL Server (Setup). This process involves running the SQL Server setup from your Enterprise Edition media and selecting the option to upgrade from an existing instance of SQL Server to a different edition.

I hope this answers your question.
