Verify Domain

I'm simply trying to set up a google cloud.  One of the first steps is to add a domain name for the cloud.  I do have one that I had registered.  But part of the domain verification is to add a TXT record to the domain's name server.  But I do not have a nameserver because the domain is not hosted anywhere.  I am missing the understanding of how google cloud works.  If I'm giving google cloud a domain name that I've registered, then I would assume it is going to use that domain name and host the cloud with it.  So if google is going to host the cloud using the domain name I've registered, why do I need to host the domain name somewhere else?  I don't understand.

Or is it that I can actually give google cloud a domain name that I do host somewhere.  Like my website and email.  That ultimately I'll add nodes to the nameserver of my main company domain.

The help pages aren't very helpful in describing how it uses the domain that I provide to google cloud.
