You cannot connect to the VM instance because of an unexpected error

So I've had this VM instance for several years and it's all been workng well. However I think it ran out of disk space so i'm trying to login via ssh to delete some log files (I believe it has more than 50 GBs of log files) and when i try to do it  I get this error:

------------------

You cannot connect to the VM instance because of an unexpected error. Wait a few moments and then try again

------------------

Can somebody tell me what to do?

So after a few days I found out i need to do the following:
1) Un-attach the boot disk from the  machine.
2) create a new vm
3) attach the disk to the new vm
4) ssh in the new machine
5) mount the disk in some folder
6) delete the 47GB of log files

This whole thing would've been prevented so easily if google could just send me a warning email "Hey you are running our of disk space". i can't believe they don't provide this option.
