Looker vs. Looker Studio

This has probably asked before. but what are the differances and key differances between looker and looker studio?

I've been searching for this answer and I find post about the looker vs Studio etc. but most of those articles are out of date. written in 2023 or 2024. I assume there has been updates to both products since 2023.

so what is the differance?

For a maintained product family page, you can check out the Looker Docs homepage.

The blog posts you've seen from 2023 and 2024 probably aren't terribly out of date. Sure, new features have been added to each products, but the core function of each product hasn't changed too much.

In a nutshell:

  • Looker Studio is a relatively quick and easy data visualization tool. It's free. You can easily upload CSV and Excel files. You can easily connect Looker Studio to other data sources like YouTube and Google Analytics.
  • Looker is a structured data governance tool. You define your metrics and join logic, and then share those definitions across your business. Control over permissions and data access is more granular and robust.

Those are the main two Looker products. There are some variations, but they are relatively minor:

  • You can purchase Looker Studio Pro for some additional features on top of Looker Studio, and access to the support team.
  • You can purchase Looker (Google Cloud core) as an alternative to Looker. The features are very similar, but it can be useful to manage Looker directly from your Google Cloud console.

@sam8, thanks for the response.

I also notice some more slight variations. like Studio in looker (or Looker Reports it might now be called).

what is the difference here?
