[Preview] Calculated Fields are supported for Looker Connector

Hi everyone:

TLDR

The Looker Studio team is previewing support for Calculated Fields when using Looker Connector as a data source. This feature aims to improve the analysts experience by allowing users to create custom dimensions and measures to better analyze their data.

The feature works on Looker Studio, Looker Studio Pro, and Studio in Looker.

What is included in these enhancements

In this first release, we plan to support 40 of a total 57 functions which are used to define Custom Fields in Looker (original). The remaining (17) functions will be added over the next few months. Existing Studio functionality of auto completion and syntax validation will also be supported for Looker Connector. The validation will limit users to use only the supported Looker Connector functions.

Similar to other data connectors, users will be able to define calculated fields on both the charts and data sources. Additionally, calculated fields based on Looker data source will work as expected with blending.

Additional details

  • Following functions will be supported for Phase 1:

AVG, COUNT_DISTINCT, MAX, MIN, SUM, ABS, ACOS, ASIN, ATAN, CEIL, COS, FLOOR, POWER, ROUND, SIN, SQRT, TAN, CASE, CASE (SIMPLE), CONCAT, STRPOS, LOWER, UPPER, MEDIAN, CAST, LOG, LOG10, DATE_DIFF, DATE_FROM_UNIX_DATE, DATETIME, UNIX_DATE, STRLEFT, STRLEN, STRREPLACE, STRRIGHT, SUBSTR, IF, IFNULL, NULLIF, COALESCE

  • Looker Table Calculations are not supported at this time. The current release allows creation of Calculated Fields similar to Custom Dimensions and Measures in Looker (0).
  • Looker permissions (create_custom_fields, create_table_calculations) are not checked when a user creates or edits a calculated field in Studio.
