Hi there,
We are planning to migrate to Looker from Tableau.
Instead of creating model from scratch, I am curious to know is there any way/connector to automate my Tableau models to LooML?
Hi @sololearner, thanks for your post!
We currently don't have a way to automate Tableau models to LookML, but I did find a few posts that might be helpful for your migration!
I can definitely see that having the ability to automate models from Tableau to Looker would make migration a lot easier - if you are willing, it would be helpful to our team to know more about your use case. Instructions for providing that information and filing a feature request in the Looker platform Looker platform are here: https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/The-Kitchen-Table/Feature-Requests-How-your-feedback-makes-L...
Hello @sololearner
To add to other points offered by Lobo-Google...
Remodel vs Lift-and-shift: I recommend, when embarking on a migration, make a decision whether to develop 'typical' looker explores, which will facilitate simplicity and logical consistency as you go forward to develop new contents with Looker. This implies breaking down the use cases from Tableau, analyzing requirements that were never adequately served from Tableau, and developing something new and better (but you should expect differences) in looker.
Alternatively, if the goal is to replicate (as closely as possible without a lot of requirements and work), the tiles that exist in Tableau, you can consider trying to generating Tableau sql statements for each query, and create views and explores based on the corresponding SQL.
One more hint I can provide: In my experience, the hardest part of analyzing Tableau and creating corresponding objects in Looker is probably Level of Detail tableau calculations. For these, I have use corresponding derived tables in looker models to achieve similar aggregations.
I worked with Impetus (leaplogic) last year who did this for us. I'd suggest exploring them for this need.
