Looker is excited to announce new hosting options for our customers hosted in the Looker Cloud. Beginning in November, Looker customers can choose to have their instances hosted on either Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with plans to expand on these hosting options to include Microsoft Azure in early 2020.
Customers who choose to have Looker host their environments can focus on data and insights while avoiding unnecessary infrastructure management burden. Looker-hosted customers receive benefits that include system performance monitoring, managed upgrades, backups and recovery, and more.
As we continue to support a choice of clouds, our customers’ growing multicloud needs, and a range of hosting options, our commitment to security and compliance best practices remains strong. In June 2019, Looker achieved Service Organization Control 2 (SOC 2) Type 1 for Looker Cloud hosted on GCP, well before hosting on GCP will be generally available. The SOC 2 report demonstrates Looker’s commitment to the principles of security, availability, and confidentiality in our hosted production environments.
Looker already maintains a SOC 2 Type 2 report for Looker Cloud instances hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This report includes tests of design and operating effectiveness for our existing hosted environment as well as information on our practices, ranging from vulnerability management to endpoint protection, providing assurance that your information has appropriate safeguards in place.
Looker has also chosen to transition to a Kubernetes architecture, which provides more hosting flexibility over traditional virtual environments. The SOC 2 Type 1 for GCP report provides tests of design for our new Kubernetes based infrastructure housed on GCP. Now that we have our SOC 2 Type 1 for GCP, we will be testing this, along with our AWS infrastructure, during our Type 2 testing in the beginning of next year.
