Can we use Google Workspace Gmail at the same time with our on premise mail server?

Hello admins!

We have an onpremise mail server and want to migrate to Google Workspace gradually. At first stage we want some users to use the Google Workspace Gmail for senting & receiving emails and the other ones will use the current mail server.

Is there a way to do that or do we have to transfer and use all the mail accounts under our domain from day one? If that's possible do we have to pay licences for all the email accounts we have at our company?

Thank you in advance.

Yes, you can do exactly that--that's what we did when we transitioned ~10 years ago here at UC Berkeley. See the "Split Delivery" option described at https://support.google.com/a/answer/2685650?hl=en

The high-level summary is that you are essentially telling Gmail "if the address that this message is addressed to exists here in Gmail, deliver it here in Gmail; otherwise if you can't find it here send it over to this other server."

Hope that helps,

Ian

Thank you very much. You were very helpful simplified the split delivery!

Do we have to pay licences for the email accounts that will be on our mail server (not in Gmail)?

No--it's literally a "anything you can't find here, send it over there" thing--Gmail has no knowledge of the list of addresses/accounts on the other server.
