Chat custom status visibility

Custom Chat statuses aren't visible to external users, even when the following is set to ON in Admin Console:

Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Google Chat and classic Hangouts > External Chat Settings > Show status

This causes confusion because it leads users to believe that others (including external users) can view their (custom) status - whereas only their non-custom status (active, do not disturb, away) is visible.

Curiously, custom statuses set by gmail.com Google Workspace users are visible not only to other gmail.com users, but also to users in Google Workspace (for business/enterprise/education) organizations... but the other way around, is not.

Is this intentional, or is the rollout of this feature simply incomplete?

Hi Christian,

I have the same issue this week. Asked the support about this. They replied to the users who is on Workspace it's not possible to display custom status to external users (like gmail or any other Google Chat users). I totally support you about this feature request. The custom Google Chat Status should be available to display for any Google Chat users (if with an additional settings from Workspace). Who is working internally only in these days? We are working remote with many other organizations, this is a very handy and useful feature to display personal availability to others (outside of workspace organization) we work together.

So +1 to your post.

Sincerely,
Orhan

Thanks for the +1!--
