GCDS On prem Domain is not the same as Workspace Domain

Will this work? My on-prem (LDAP/Samba) domain ends in .lan and my Workspace ends in .com.

If do-able, how?

I'm not very bright on the subject matter but isn't that solution for Directory Sync?  How does it relate to GCDS?  Or am I missing something?
