Gmail notifications on Android

The Gmail app for Android allows users to reply, archive, or delete messages right from the notifications bar.

We all know that's how it's been for ages - the option to mark the following message as read didn't exist, and it still doesn't. Is there, by any chance, any workaround? It's incredibly annoying.

@micjar  I Haven't tested it but these are the workarounds I got from the internet :

  1. Swipe the notification: When you receive a new email notification, you can swipe the notification to the right or left, depending on your device, to dismiss the notification and mark the email as read. This should work if you have the "Swipe to archive" option enabled in the Gmail app settings.

  2. Use a third-party app: There are several third-party apps available on the Google Play Store that allow you to mark emails as read directly from the notification bar. One such app is "Notif Pro", which lets you customize your notification actions and add a "Mark as Read" option for Gmail notifications.

  3. Use a notification manager app: You can also try using a notification manager app like "Notification Toggle" that allows you to create custom notification buttons for various apps, including Gmail. You can create a button to mark an email as read and add it to your notification bar.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             #1 don't sound right, may be you can try #2 and #3

@micjar  Did you mean mark as sent or mark as read?

Read obviously - my mistake, sorry! I'm editing my post.

Hi! It took me a while, but I'm coming back with a response.

1. Doesn't work - swiping the notification to the left or to the right dismiss it, but it's still unread in the mailbox.

2. I couldn't find Notif Pro anywhere, but I've downloaded the AutoNotification app, and it's brilliant, not only when it comes to customizing Gmail buttons.

3. I may have done something wrong because within Notification Toggle, I could only create a tile that could be added to the quick settings panel.

Anyways, it's working. Thanks.

As of my last knowledge update, the Gmail app for Android indeed did not have a native option to mark messages as read directly from the notifications bar. However, software applications are frequently updated, and features can change.

If you're still facing this issue, here are a couple of potential workarounds you could try:

  1. Update the Gmail App:

    • Ensure that you have the latest version of the Gmail app installed on your Android device. Developers often introduce new features and improvements with updates.
  2. Gmail Settings:

    • Check the Gmail app settings on your Android device. Open the Gmail app, tap on the three horizontal lines in the upper-left corner, scroll down, and go to "Settings." Look for any options related to notifications or actions and see if there are new features available.
  3. Android Notification Channels:

    • On some Android devices, you can customize notification channels for specific apps. Go to your device's settings, find "Apps" or "Notifications," and look for Gmail. Within the Gmail settings, you might find options to customize notification actions.
  4. Third-Party Apps:

    • Explore third-party apps available on the Google Play Store that may provide enhanced notification features for Gmail. Be cautious and choose apps with good reviews and reputations.
  5. Task Automation Apps:

    • Apps like Tasker or Automate allow you to create customized tasks and automate actions on your Android device. You might be able to set up a task that marks emails as read when they arrive.

Remember that the availability of certain features can vary depending on the Android version, device manufacturer, and Gmail app version. Always ensure your apps and device software are up to date to access the latest features and improvements.

If, after trying these suggestions, the issue persists, it's possible that the specific feature you're looking for has not been implemented by Google yet. In that case, consider providing feedback through the Gmail app or Google Play Store to let the developers know about your desired feature. They often take user feedback into account when planning updates and improvements
