Google Drive File Stream Question re: Errors

When GFS is syncing, it will sometimes throw up errors. For instance last night after a sync was done there were 100 or so errors. But now today it says "everything is up to date" and if I look at the error list (Settings > Error List) it says "Looks Good" and shows no errors. So did GFS sync some more and the errors are fixed? Or did it sync a few new files and because those new files synced OK, just wipe out the error list? In which case I have hundreds of files not properly backed up.

Bump. Anyone? Thank You

Hi David,

The problem is that no matter the answer that you get here you won't be sure that it is the absolute truth... And you'd be right not to be.

Depending on the cause of the error the sync client should:

  • skip the file (if the file is considered insecure by Google Drive, for instance)
  • or retry (if the API limits for the daily upload have been reached, for instance)

Assuming that you copied files to the Google Drive folder instead of moving them (which would be very risky), you can do this:

  1. using the local file explorer check the size of all the files and folders that should have been uploaded. I mean, the files in the original location. Select them all at once and right-click and check the details about the number of files and size (you must compare "size", NOT "size on disk" as this depends on the size of the allocation blocks).
  2. Then do the same for the files and folder that you have uploaded (or synced up). If the number of files and the size matches then you should be fine. If not, you need something else to be sure...

So, if the method above showed differences between the local files and the uploaded one, in order for you to be completely sure, you would need to redo the sync (so, you'd have to clear the local Drive cache and delete the uploaded files and folders to avoid creating duplicates), and then pay attention to the errors and check the files later, using Google Drive's web UI and checking if they match the local files.

I hope this helps.
