If you are looking for an enterprise SaaS solution(s), I would recommend SysCloud.  Another one that I have used is Spanning.   Without looking, I think our current SysCloud configuration is to do partials on the weekdays and a full backup on the weekend.   Both Spanning and SysCloud also offer retention policies that will automatically purge emails or other files based on your organization's data retention policy.  That part is extremely important for us.

We recently suffered a data loss. Our entire GD was deleted by a user (the owner - not me!).

We have a backup regime that did in fact backup all our files. This backup is maintained OUTSIDE the GD ecosystem.

I initiated a restore. We have approx 350gb of data and 350k files. Mostly small PDFs.

The restore worked, sort of. The files were being restored at about 3-5 seconds each.
350k, even at a 1 second per file (average), this would take 97hrs to restore. Assuming nothing went wrong in the interim. This time was VERY optimistic. I left the restore running for a LOT longer, and the quantity restored was miniscule.

I downloaded a ZIP file of the backup and manually restored folders.
Permissions and other issues means that we are still feeling the pinch two weeks on.

What is needed is a LOCAL TO GD backup so the backup can be renamed or copied within the ecosystem, thus making the restore much more timely.

Any ideas?

That stinks.  Sorry you are having to deal with that.

For future issues, have you looked at Vault and if it might have been helpful?  I would also recommend Spin but unsure of the exact problem and if they would have helped. -KAM

Thanks for that. I will look at both.

Because we don't have THAT much data, and it doesn't change that much, just adding new files daily, I am looking at writing a CarbonCopyCloner equivalent to store the data within our GD. The issue for us is not the destruction of the datacentre or infrastructure (that's Google's responsibility), but the deletion of the data.

So we will have two backups: an external which we will use as a last resort and an internal backup for first responses.

Cheers,
Nick

Veeam is a nice backup solution, but it is kind of complicated.
