Google space question

It’s probably been asked a million times, but I’m starting a thread! So my work community uses Google space and direct messages for communication. We have one chat in the Google space, and every time someone hits to reply to a message directly, it starts a new thread (see screenshot)… why does it do this, and how do we make it stop? It clutters up things… (it’s the whole team one, as you can see it keeps replicating itself every time a new comment is made to a specific comment
