Leave Group/Shared inbox as external user - possible spam issue?

While setting up a Collaborative Inbox using a group (following these instructions ), I noticed something that strikes me as odd, especially regarding spam/security context. Quick overview:

We wanted to use the Collaborative Inbox to share access to an Inbox between two organizations, however we quickly realized that it is not working the way we thought it would:

Org A sets up a Collaborative Inbox as per instructions. Now in order to allow users of org B to access the Inbox, they must have access to the Group within org A. Group access permission settings do not allow to give specific users or an outside organization access to a group, but only to switch between full public access (everyone in the internet) and limited (this is so sad for enterprise scenarios, feature request incoming).

Anyway, trying to work around this, I noticed it is actually possible to add external users to the group and they do receive all messages which are being received on the inbox, forwarded as email. But what I did not find - and this is my question to this group: How can an external user leave a group?

Because when I look at the list of "My Groups" within org B, I can not see this group due to it's access permissions only allowing to see it within org A. It appears to me I will receive every email posted to this group without any option to unsubscribe/leave, unless a group admins removes me from the group. Or is there a special page within Groups, allowing you to remove yourself from external Groups?

Hi @coldice :

A few things to look at:

1) If the Org B user is a member of a group in Org A, I believe they should be able to see it under “All groups” in the left nav bar in the Groups interface, https://groups.google.com/all-groups

2) The user in Org B should be able to see all of the groups in Org A that they are member of by going to https://groups.google.com/a/orga.com

3) If not, going to https://groups.google.com/a/orga.com/g/group-name should get them to the info about the group, and clicking on “My membership settings” in the left nav bar should take them to a page where they can leave the group (https://groups.google.com/a/orga.com/g/group-name/membership)

4) They can always leave via email, by sending email to group-name+unsubscribe@orga.com

Hope that helps, at least a little,

Ian

Hey icrew, thank you for your quick reply! I have tested all four approaches, and only the last one has worked - but it works! Thanks for this 🙂

1) Group is not listed under All groups (I think because it is only visible for org members)

2) This url automatically forwards me to https://groups.google.com/my-groups, always

3) On both pages, I see "Content unavailable" (see following screen).

4) Did work out 👍 I still think though, there should be a way to somehow leave these groups via the UI. I must admit though that I overlooked the note about 4) at the end of the forwarded email, so it is clear that this is the way to leave.

Thank you!
