Logic behind threaded spaces

Hi Workspace Community!

I would like to hear your opinion on the specifications of right side threading.
In our organization we've embraced spaces with open arms and given slack some run for their money.
A key selling point for me as Google Workspace admin was that "right side threading is coming". But if you read the fingerprint it clearly states that existing spaces with threading activated will be classified as "spaces organized by conversation topic". We activated threading on the spaces where we obviously want threading. And now they will not be able to be reconfigured?

What's the logic behind this? We cannot possibly be the only organization who thinks this is a bit backward..
Looking forward to hearing your oppinions.

"In-line threading functionality will depend on which type of space you’re using:
  • In-line threading will be available in existing spaces where there is a single stream of unthreaded messages, previously known as “unthreaded spaces.”
  • Existing spaces with messages and replies grouped together for everyone in the main chat window were previously known as “threaded spaces” and will now be referred to as “spaces organized by conversation topic.” These spaces will not have in-line threading and cannot be reconfigured. "

I think the logic behind this is the fact that the old "classic" threaded spaces will be phased out next year. They will stop existing. So they probably didn't bother bringing the new threading option in. Which would not be that easy to do, as they are already threaded. You would end up with "nested threading", if that makes sense.

Google has not yet confirmed how the old spaces will be migrated once they are getting shut down.

Your best option is probably to re-create your existing Spaces and leave the old ones as an archive of sorts. Convince users to use the new ones and only refer to the old ones if they need to look something up.

Hi cryptochrome,
Thank you so much for your point of view. That does make sense. Do you have any documentation you could refer to where they say od spaces will be shut down? First I hear of it.

In-line Threading in Chat Spaces

Beginning in early 2023, the option to create spaces organized by conversation topic will be removed, and in-line threading will be the standard for all new spaces.

Existing spaces will not be impacted.

Any logic that might be inherent to the design of the Chat service is also tainted by business decisions

The primary messaging window has had the option of topic conversation threading, and now in its place is in-line threading (response threads to a Chat message).  I agree with you that these are different components (more than just UI) to a messaging platform. I would rather that Google simply add the in-line threading instead of replacing the topic conversation option.

Essentially, by mid-2023, there will be only one type of Chat Space paradigm, that of ongoing messages with in-line threads.  And the only options will be Restricted participation with or without external user access, and Open to all in the organization.
