My Drive reverts to G:\.shortcut-targets-by-id\1ecqh68rKEhWPsVZA7xPirmOIcrxJGwOF

Hi all,

I have a user @ a clients whereby when they open a folder shortcut from their My Drive, it opens the below file path:

G:\.shortcut-targets-by-id\1ecqh68rKEhWPsVZA7xPirmOIcrxJGwOF

I understand that this is due to Shortcut being added to the My Drive from the original folder, however is there a way to add a direct link, so as to eliminate .shortcut-targets-by-id\1ecqh68rKEhWPsVZA7xPirmOIcrxJGwOF and allow it to display "MyDrive".

This issue is causing my client difficulties with sharing saving detailed CAD drawings with their colleague!

Any help\assistance\tips would be greatly appreciated

One very good option would be to share the documents using a Shared Drive instead of MyDrive. There are also a bunch of other benefits of that, including not losing access to important documents if a userโ€™s account is disabled or deleted when they leave the organization.

Hope that helps, at least a little,

Ian

I've solved it by creating a new user, moving content to this user and configuring an aditional account in Google Drive for Windows with another Drive Letter like X:\

The is creative, but of course the only problem is tracking who changed what document since now it's all under the same User Account. Otherwise, a good fix.

Have you found any potential work arounds for this?

We are an Architecture firm and are also having issues with file paths and our software, such as Autodesk, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office not working properly.

We have also not been able to implement Shared Drives as reccomended by @icrew becuase our office folders, which consistet of all the projects, support, and reference folders for our office to operate exceeds the 400,000 item limit set on Shared Drives.

Can you not split them across multiple Shared Drives, e.g. a Shared Drive per project (or some other suitably sized portion)?

There's no limit on the number of Shared Drives you can make.

We can, we would just need to rethink how we organize our company around 7 main folders, Projects being one of the seven. It will be a substantial overhaul of the structure we have used for 7 years with Google Drive but we can figure something out. It sounds like reorganizing the folder structure is the path forward as the file path issues we are experiencing are not a problem with Shared Drive.

Thank you for your thoughts!

Hello!

Same problem here. How did you solve it? Did you have a solution using shared drives? Maybe creating individual shared drives folders for each project?
Thanks in advance.

Yes true we are also Structural consultants and already shared lakhs of files with our 2-3 users. Now due to this shortcut features, we are unable to save many of our coded excels or other file. Once opened directly on drive its making file corrupt.

I shared this issues with google Development team but after month of research they finally declined to revert our drive to original.

By creating an additional new User and moving "affected" content to this new user, is working to us.

You need to use Admin Console - Applications - Google Workspace - Drive and Documents - Transfer Owner, to the new user.

Then in Google Drive for Windows, we've added this new User, like this

So now, we have 2 Drive letter, main user with G and the other with X for example, if you open any folder from X you have no problems.

@InfoPro the question is would be my changes in the X Drive saved in the original folder that was shared with me by the owner?

@NatanK Yes, It would work. Try it.

See im image how our internal communication has badly affected due to this link Shortcut feature. I ll say that this is one of the most poor feature.

Google has given option to not opt for this feature from admin console, but even that option is not effective for all users.

request google team to look into it.

Hi, try to use subst command, worked for me.

hi Natan, could you elaborate a bit on your comment?

Hi, would you mind elaborating a bit please?

Hello Betlus.

I couldn't open files in Google Drive within certain program because of this long shortcut name. So I subtituted my Google Drive on desktop folder by virtual drive using subst command in cmd.

Copy this link, good luck.

brilliant solution!!! Thank you!!!

Not mine, but you're wellcome!:)

Yes! Thank You NatanK, the SUBST command saved us! We are also an Architectural firm that had this same issue.
