Organisational Units do not apply to Team Dashboard?

Hi All,

I am using Google Workspace Essentials Starter. I currently have directory settings set up so that an Organisational Unit, let's say is called "A", cannot view the contact details of others.

This experience, as you would expect, is reflected across Drive, Docs etc. The directory in Gmail also does not offer the autofill of other users for those users within Organisational Unit A.

However, on a users' first sign-in, they get taken to the "Team dashboard" (https://workspace.google.com/u/0/team/dashboard) from which they can click "People" and it will show everyone in the Workspace entity.

Notably, Organisational Unit A can only be applied after the user is created, so technically, until the admin does that, they should be able to access this page; but as soon as the change is applied, they shouldn't.

However, even after applying the Organisational Unit to the user, they are still able to access this URL and view all of the users within the Workspace entity.

Is there a way to change this? If so, I would appreciate it. If it's a bug, I hope this post can report it.

@HDTLAdmin  First of all OU can be selected while creating the user itself..

for that you can click on the button shown below  and then you will get the option to edit OU

and secondly ,what is the  Visibility settings for the particular ou you are applying this.....

Have you already created a custom directory for this OU?

Hi @ajojose33333344 - thanks for your quick reply.

The plan I am on does not support creating users, but instead inviting them. To get the ability to create users, I would need to verify my domain, and upgrade the plan, which I am not currently in a position to do.

I have tried creating a Custom Directory for the OU. It asks me for a directory name and group. I first of all assumed this was Google Groups, however I apparently need to create a Group through the admin console.

However, the "Groups" option is not available in my admin console, nor is Google Groups for Business in the Apps section of the console.

Nevertheless, every time I attempt to create a custom directory, it always fails after I click the create button. I assume this is because I haven't linked a group (which I can't do in the first place!)?

I hope that makes sense and offers some more context to the issue. As mentioned in the initial post, the OU settings are currently set to "No users", which is fine.

My only main concern is that users can go to the "People" list on the Team dashboard and view everyone, despite, through OU, it is meant to be conditionally inaccessible to them ("No users" selected).

@HDTLAdmin  Thanks for the detailed reply...It was new for me to know that the user creation is not possible and groups is not supported for Essential starter ,thanks for the eye opener...As i have tested ,yes the custom directory needs a group,,which isn't feasible in your case....

And changing the  visibility settings "No users" still shows the users for me...somewhat your similar behavior i guess...i  am thinking that it could be due to propagation time...i will let you know the details after a while......

Meanwhile we will see if the other experts does have a better solution here....
