WebRTC & VP9

When evaluating webcams, does "Certified for Google Meet" mean "supports WebRTC/VP9"? I never see WebRTC and VP9 in technical specs for web conferencing products.

In my opinion, the "Certified for Google Meet" label is really marketing.

Any webcam today that connects to a computer system via USB cable is a UVC device, which means it'll transmit video is one or more compressed formats which a driver in the system will take to pass along to an application or service.

WebRTC is a feature of modern web browsers to facilitate streaming of communication data.

Usability of a webcam for Google Meet is mostly about resolution these days, and the Google Meet service will provide a maximum resolution of 720p, so the webcam should provide at least this resolution for the best video experience. (note: this doesn't of course negate other factors such as system processing performance and network throughput, both of which affect the overall Google Meet experience.)

Google Meet Hardware, (annual licensed usage), allows 4K video streaming and 4K UHD displays.

The bottom line is that unless you're purchasing a camera for a Google Meet Hardware configuration,  a USB webcam that does 720p or 1080p will work fine.
