Changes to SMS Task with default AppSheet Channel April 21, 2025

Hi everyone,

If you do not use SMS messages with the default AppSheet Channel in your automations, this does not affect you, and you can stop reading here.

Starting April 21, 2025, the AppSheet default SMS channel will no longer be available for use in the Send an SMS task.

For more context on this decision, let me explain how the SMS task works today. The โ€œSend an SMSโ€ Step allows app creators to send text messages to end users via a default AppSheet channel or a custom Twilio channel. Tasks configured with the default SMS channel use a Toll Free number managed by AppSheet. The Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA) has specific usage requirements for this Toll Free number including understanding the exact messaging content, senders and its recipients. As our user base grows, it has become increasingly challenging to reliably ensure usage is inline with these requirements. As a result, the default SMS channel will be removed.

App creators who are currently using the Send an SMS task with the AppSheet default channel have already been contacted and will receive an additional reminder shortly.

Action required

Starting April 21, 2025, the AppSheet default SMS channel will no longer be available. Existing SMS tasks using the default SMS channel will fail to execute after April 21, 2025. The default SMS channel is already hidden for new apps. Users with a custom Twilio messaging channel configured will not be affected by this change.

Steps to take

  1. To continue sending SMS notifications with automations, create a Twilio account with a verified number for your use case. Instructions for configuring your own Twilio channel with AppSheet can be found in the send an SMS message from an automation support article.
  2. Alternatively, update your automations with another notification type Task, such as the:
