There's a documented process for setting a custom key for api products in Apigee Edge :

Can the same be used to set an 'externally generated key" ?

Use case:

An implementation has an authentication service that provides consumer keys. These consumer keys need to be used and need to be routed through Apigee to the Authentication service.
