Defaults being ignored the first time a user opens the app

I have a link to my app from Google Sites.  The link has default values like this (sorry that the URL encoding makes it hard to read):

https://www.appsheet.com/start/80c2f60a-4bc6-40cd-a686-986cca37911a?refresh=1#view=ROI%20Calculator%...

Unfortunately, the very first time a user clicks on the app the URL gets rewritten like this:

https://www.appsheet.com/start/80c2f60a-4bc6-40cd-a686-986cca37911a?refresh=1#appName=ROICalculatorI...

As you can see, the defaults are stripped off and my app breaks.  If they click a second time it works, but I cannot ask everybody to open the app twice.

I can reproduce this by clearing my cache and using an incognito window.

Could someone tell me why this is happening, and how to fix it?
