Disable Expression Assistant

Good Day!

Wondering if it is possible to enter an expression directly in the formula boxes without opening the assistant window.  Say if i want to change the default value of 30 columns by copy paste or just typing a number.  Then ideally clicking the flask would open the assistant.  THis would speed up a lot of editing IMO but I can not find an option/toggle anywhere or any info in help articles or posts here!
