Map overlay and/or filters?

Hi,

I have a map view and I'd like to add an overlay or at least a text that shows the amount of locations on the map. I'd also like to let the user filter the locations.

Is any of this possible?

This is the closest you can get to an "overlay":

You cannot add arbitrary text or images to the map display.

Filtering can be done from the search control:
