For the domain auth function, as far as I remember, "Google Domain" should have been deprecated sometimes ago and then replaced to "Google Cloud" or "Google Identification" whichever to be called by Google team. However, it appears to me the formal documationtation never being updated at all, which gives us confusion...
@lizlynch could you investigate to tell us what is the truth?
As far as I understand, Google Domain, Google Identification and Google Cloud are all separate things - kind of.
Google Domain - the part of the account email address AFTER the "@". This is normally "gmail.com" but many businesses setup a Google Domain specific for their business - e.g. "@willowmobilesystems.com". This allows the business to control the user accounts with admin privileges.
Google Identification - the part of account email address BEFORE the "@". These must be unique within the domain but can be any qualifying identifier.
Google Identification "@" Google Domain = the Google account/email address. These can be established as individual accounts or as accounts under a Group that can then be given controlled access privileges by the domain admin.
Google Cloud - a set of cloud-based services accessed by the Google Account. I imagine domain access can be setup as well such as in AppSheet - i.e. any account with the assigned Google Domain can access that service, etc.
