Prevent moving to next tab in a form or saving

I have a multi-tab form using "Show" fields that I need to prevent someone from saving the form or advancing to the next tab/screen without completing all required fields on the first tab.  Having trouble figuring out how to accomplish this.  I can stop the next tab from showing based on certain "isnotblank" conditions, but I don't seem to be able to prevent saving.  Further, I'd prefer it if they just can't advance a tab until the tab they're on has all required fields completed without complex "isnotblank" logic.  It seems pretty straightforward that there should be a setting that keeps a user from advancing a form if required fields aren't completed.  I can't allow users to save an incomplete audit (which is what this form is for), and it would be considered "incomplete" if the first as well as the second tab are not completed, but I don't want to show them the second tab unless the first is done.  Thanks in advance for any help!

You probably know this, and its probably not the ideal fix, since the user won't be able to see the upcoming sections, but if you use the Page Count option rather than Tabs you can prevent users from progressing if they haven't completed required fields. This would also prevent them from easily navigating to previous tabs to update responses, which might be an issue as well.
