Use your internet browser's [back] button to return to previous editor screens

Did you know that you can use the back button in your internet browser to “reverse navigate” in the editor???

  • Turns out, each time you click on something (a panel on the left, tabs on the top, tables, actions, bots…) the URL changes in the browser accordingly
    • Which gives you the ability to easily “reverse course” and go back to where you just were!

@praveen @Adam @Dan_Bahir who else…

  • I’m curious to know if there’s anything we should be aware of when doing this
    • Like… will this somehow cause the changes we’ve made before navigating away to be lost?
  • Or are we free to use the back buttons and they won’t have an effect on the “current version” of the app?

So far I’ve had no issues with doing this. (^_^) 3X_c_8_c894633685b607dcad8bd19f28d5c98f0a09a31f.gif

Unless something has changed recently, I have experienced issues when using the browser back button and ended up losing changes. It’s been a while, but I think this happens if you have not yet tapped Save, navigate back and then Save. Kinda makes sense right? But if you are making changes quickly it’s sometime easy to forget you haven’t saved. I’ve lost complete sets of actions this way.

This is good to know… I’ve always been a bit leery about using this.

But I’ve done the following scenario… dozens of times now… and haven’t had any problems with lost changes. (But based on my order of operations, there really shouldn’t be anything to lose.)

  1. Nav to (Actions)
  2. Create a new action
  3. Update various bits inside (name, table, type, columns, formulas, etc. etc.)
  4. Navigate to Data>Columns>Specific_Table
  5. Open the settings for a specific column, search around inside… open a formula builder, copy some code
  6. Cancel the formula builder (NOT saving anything…)
  7. Hit the back button until I get back to the action I created
  8. Paste the code I copied into whatever space I was working on
  9. Save

When following this flow, all changes I made are retained after the save. I think it might be a matter of watching what you’re doing between the forwards/backwards navigation.

  • I my mind I see it like this:

    • All I’m doing is going somewhere… then returning to the exact same place.
    • Since I didn’t make any changes along the way… it should be literally the exact same place I previously was.
  • So I should be able to continue forward from there with no problems.

Yes, I agree. We should all save early and often anyway! Especially in this environment where there is no auto-save function. This will minimize any losses if there ever were any.
