most of the names in the system cannot because they are used inside urls (for example, for workflow rules, they may be used inside the url for testing the rule).

+Steve Coile Hi Steve, the name of the workflow rule might be used to create files or folders for archiving any template or attachment generated by the workflow. If there are periods or slashes in the name of the workflow, the resulting names of the archive files and folders, as well as their file paths, will become invalid. Therefore these characters are not allowed in workflow rules’ names.
