Unexpected Geocoding API Huge Bill Due to Coding Error

Hello everyone,

My co-founder and I are two students currently building a carpooling mobile app called Flyte, which uses Firebase and Google Cloud services.

In our early-stage project, we use the Geocoding API to get coordinates from user-entered addresses when they create new rides. Unfortunately, due to a mistake in our code, we were unintentionally calling the Geocoding API every time a ride tile was displayed in the app, instead of only once during ride creation.

This bug went unnoticed for a few days, and we just discovered that it caused a huge spike in API usage, resulting in a bill of over $1000 USD. We have now fully corrected the issue and implemented safeguards to prevent this from ever happening again.

However, as students with no funding, this unexpected charge is extremely stressful and puts our project – and even our personal finances – at serious risk.

We are reaching out here to ask if anyone in the community has experienced something similar and whether there are ways to request billing support, credit reimbursement, or a partial cancellation of accidental overuse. Any advice, contact, or experience you can share would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help and support.
