Dataplex Catalog utilizes both Aspects and Tags to provide a comprehensive view of your data assets, but they serve distinct purposes. Aspects focus on capturing and automatically managing technical metadata like schema, storage location, and access controls, aiding in data governance, quality monitoring, and lineage tracking. These are pre-defined and populated by the system. On the other hand, Tags are used to define and apply business metadata, like data sensitivity or usage guidelines, enabling users to easily discover and understand data based on business context. Tags are manually applied and managed through Tag Templates. While both contribute to data discoverability, Aspects are about the technical characteristics essential for managing and governing data, while Tags are about the business context that enhances understanding and enables business-driven data usage. Therefore, both are valuable and work together to support a wide range of use cases, making it unlikely that Tags will be removed as they provide a crucial business-oriented layer on top of the technical foundation provided by Aspects.
