Why is MySQL version 8.4 not listed as an option in Cloud Console?

While creating a new instance, it's currently not possible to select MySQL version 8.4. According to the documentation it should be generally available for a while already. Furthermore, I did manage to create a new 8.4 instance using Cloud Shell.

Is it safe to run a new CloudSQL production instance on 8.4 or has it intentionally been removed because of known issues?

I understand that you cannot see MySQL 8.4 as an option in the database version for creating MySQL instances in the console. I’ve also checked on my end, but it is also not available; I’ve also tried to create a MySQL 8.4 instance via gcloud and it was successfully created. I suspect that there is a bug with the console so I highly suggest filing this as a bug issue stating the problem you have encountered, steps or actions performed and what you expect to happen. However, please be informed that I can’t provide a timeline as to when this will be fixed. Have a read of what to expect after you’ve opened an issue.

Also, to answer your question if it is safe to run the new version, yes, it is safe as there were no known issues recorded so far for that version. Additionally, you can check the release notes from time to time.
