Handling of Google-Managed Containers in the Transition from Container Registry to Artifact Registry

Hello Community,

I'm currently navigating the transition from Google Container Registry (GCR) to Google Artifact Registry (GAR) and have a question regarding the treatment of containers hosted on GCR, especially those managed by Google. Specifically, I'm trying to understand how these containers will be handled in the context of the migration:

1. Will they remain stored on GCR without being moved?
2. Will they be migrated to GAR, with GCR providing redirects to the new locations?
3. Is it required for users to manually migrate any necessary containers to GAR themselves?

Any insights or guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated as I plan our migration strategy.

Google-managed containers during GCR to GAR migration:

• Won't be automatically migrated.
• Stay on GCR for now, but functionality might be limited.
• Check with provider for migration guidance.

Plan your migration:

• Identify Google-managed containers.
• Consult with providers for recommendations.
• Migrate your own containers to GAR using official guide.

Hello @christianpaula not sure if I understood correctly, if you don't mind I'll as a question.
For images that are provided by Google related with GKE, still on GCR, example:

• kube-system/gke-metrics-agent
• kube-system/kube-dns
• kube-system/kube-proxy
• kube-system/fluentbit-gke, etc

I have to migrate them to GAR myself? They will not be managed by Google even if the GKE service is managed by Google?
