Migrate to GCP from Huawei Cloud

Hi all,

I have a customer looking to migrate their VMs from Huawei Cloud to GCP. From my research, it appears that Google Cloud Migration Center does not support assessments directly on Huawei Cloud. However, this seems to conflict with my understanding that Migration Center performs discovery based on network access rather than the underlying hypervisor. Could someone clarify if I'm mistaken?

Additionally, since GCP Migration Center may not support this source environment, what tools can we use to perform the migration? Are there any recommended third-party solutions, such as RackWare, or any that are proven to work in this scenario?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Hi @Min_AQ,

Welcome to Google Cloud Community!

Since Google Cloud Migration Center (GCMC) can’t directly handle Huawei Cloud as a source, you can use a combination of Google Cloud services and third-party solutions to perform the migration. Here are some options:

  1. Manual Image-Based Migration (Recommended for Most Huawei → GCP Cases):
  • You can export VM images or disk snapshots from Huawei Cloud and transfer them to Google Cloud Storage, then import them to create new VMs on GCP. For smaller setups or limited VM instances, manually transferring data using secure protocols like SFTP or SCP is a straightforward option that requires minimal tooling.
  1. Google Cloud Services:
  • Cloud Data Transfer: You can use Cloud Data Transfer to move data into services like Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, or Bigtable.
  • Compute Engine: Create a new Compute Engine instance in GCP and use the gcloud compute instances import command to transfer the virtual machine from Huawei Cloud.
  • Cloud Networking: Use Cloud Networking to replicate your Huawei Cloud network setup in GCP using Cloud Networking for a smoother transition.
  1. Third-Party Migration Tools:
  • RackWare: RackWare is a well-established cloud migration platform that supports moving workloads from various sources, including Huawei Cloud, to GCP. It offers agentless replication, live and offline migrations, disaster recovery setup, automated provisioning, and application replatforming. While it's proven in multi-cloud lift-and-shift scenarios and supports less common cloud providers, it is a commercial tool with licensing costs and may require training and compatibility testing with Huawei Cloud.

In summary, although Google Cloud Migration Center doesn't directly support assessments for Huawei Cloud, you can still use a combination of Google Cloud services and third-party tools to perform the migration. Make sure to review each option's features, pricing, and support to match your customer's requirements. Additionally, consider consulting with our Google Cloud Support to help ensure a smooth and successful migration process.

You’re right that Google Cloud Migration Center focuses more on network-based discovery rather than the hypervisor itself. While direct support for Huawei Cloud might be limited, third-party tools like RackWare or CloudEndure have been effective in similar scenarios. It’s worth exploring those for VM replication and cutover.
