AppSheet Automation Preview release

The Preview release of AppSheet Automation was released today. For details, see What features are in the Preview release?

Features & Enhancements

Issue Description
Performance enhancement
When Reading from a SQL Database Minimize Data Conversions by Using the Native Data Values Returned by SQL

When data is read from a SQL database, the SQL database provider returns database field values as C# native data types.

We were performing unnecessary data conversions when reading data from SQL.

We now minimize the number of data conversions we do when reading from SQL databases to improve Sync performance.

Rollout: 100% of free users and 5% of paid users

Performance enhancement
Increase network packet size for SQL Server Databases to 32,767 Bytes.

We have increased the network packet size that is used when communicating with Microsoft SQL Server Databases to 32,767 Bytes. This can significantly improve sync performance when reading from a Microsoft SQL Server database. Deployed to all.

Bug Fixes

Issue Description
Bug Fixed edit action not working in card views. Deployed to all.
Bug
Eliminate Null reference exception when using the Log Analyzer

An issue was fixed where Log Analyzer was failing with a Null reference exception when a log property value was missing. Deployed to all.

Bug Fixes a bug and slow performance in authoring webhook tasks.

This change speeds up the performance of webhook task authoring in the editor. It also fixes a bug reported related to authoring webhook tasks that call other apps via the REST API. Deployed to all.

Hi App Creators,

As part of the efforts for the App UI Refresh, as of November 2nd all Table Views for new and existing apps will have Horizontal Scrolling enabled all the time. App Creators won’t be able to choose between ON and OFF for “Horizontal Scrolling” Under UX > Options >Table View.

Why is this happening?

In order to support new features, better functionality and styling, we are moving away from a fixed Table View. We believe this will positively impact our editors and their users in the long run!

How will my apps be impacted?

Currently, if you have not selected a Column Order in your Table View Options and you don’t have Horizontal Scrolling enabled, your users will only see as many columns as their width screen will fit. Note in the image below, only three columns are showing and no horizontal scrollbar appears.

With this change, your users will now be able to scroll right and see all columns available in the table you’re showing.

I don’t want my app users seeing all the columns. Is this something I can change?

Yes, this is something you’ll have control over. If you go to UX > Views > Table View > View Options you will be able to select which columns to show by changing the Column Order values. As long as you omit the option ** all other columns ** you will only be showing the specified columns.

If you experience any issues, please reach out as always.

Hi everyone,

As mentioned previously there, we’re adopting Material design and this is starting to get reflected in your apps. As mentioned by Mike, these changes are UI refinements and should not change how your apps behave. If you see a different behavior, please contact us preferably at support@appsheet.com.

We’ve already rolled out some of the changes (see screenshots below) to some of you for these views:

  • Card View
  • Map View
  • Onboarding View
  • About View

These are all the views that have been updated at this point, but it is possible that other views are affected as well. This is only transient. This happens because views share different components and we’ve already updated a component used in another view. We’ll continue our work to update all other views over the next couple of weeks and make them look consistent.

We’ll follow up with other posts starting next week and onward, to let you know changes you can expect to see soon or that have been deployed.

Thank you,
-The AppSheet Team

Hi everyone,
As part of our further integration with Google, we’re adopting Material design to the apps you’re creating.
This will allow your apps to take advantage of Material’s robust design framework.

Starting Oct 6th, you’ll start seeing some app UI refinements over the next several weeks, such as:

  • Responsive layouts for card and deck views (more to come)
  • Usability improvements for mobile touch targets
  • Increased legibility for events in calendar views
  • Typographic hierarchy and contrast
  • Layout and aesthetic updates to views
  • A new card view choice

This shouldn’t affect any functionality in your apps, but if you do experience any bugs, please reach out as always…
