Need help on Font Styles

Hi Team ,

We want to use custom fonts to be uploaded in Google Workspace. This way, the users in our domain would be able to use them while composing emails in Gmail or while creating Google Docs, Slides, Spreadsheets, etc. We also want to create some kind of policy/configuration in the Google Workplace Admin console to make the custom fonts the default fonts.

Note: We need the custom font to be IBM Plex.

please suggest if there is any recommended add-on or plugin for our requirement. Also, can you suggest if we can achieve this requirement with API or script?

Google Workspace doesn't support custom fonts. I'm pretty sure others have requested this over in the Feature Ideas section of this website. You might want to find those requests and upvote them.

If you do not already have access, you need to request it first. See https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/custom/page/page-id/Workspace-Feature-Ideas-FAQ for how to do that.

Once you have access, go to https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/Feature-Ideas/gh-p/workspace-ideas-group . There, you can upvote and comment on any similar idea, or post a new idea.

If you are submitting a new feature idea, be sure to explain the problem that you're trying to solve with the feature idea, not just the idea itself. For example, saying "when my users are trying to do 'A', they often get confused by the fact that the buttons to do 'X' and to do 'Y' look quite similar to each other, which leads to this unintended consequence" is far more likely to get fixed than a feature idea that just says "change the color of the button 'Y'".

Cheers,

Ian

First the bad news, @pranita_pingale Ian is 100% correct.  Moreover, I've been told Google has no plans to add this feature.  They do have many license-free fonts available for download and use in Workspace at https://fonts.google.com/

However, Second, the good news which is that IBM Plex is available from Google.  See https://fonts.google.com/specimen/IBM+Plex+Sans

This means you can download the fonts AND use them in things like Google Docs.

Hi Pranita,

As has been mentioned, Google doesn't currently allow for the hosting of custom fonts. However, it is a valid idea worth encouraging Google to pursue, particularly for Google Workspace domain accounts.
Another alternative and perhaps more traditional location to make and add your voice to feature requests is Google's Issue Tracker. I have recently added a comment to this one on the same topic: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/310321378

While it has currently been marked as infeasible, I do believe that an aspiring Google Dev would be able to develop TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 hosting within the Google Workspace admin panel and then provide an option for that file to be added to customs fonts within Google Workspace apps. This would certainly provide added value to the Google Workspace product and a marketing edge for Google.

To expand on KAM's response to add IBM Plex Sans to your Google Workspace apps, here is a link to a guide: https://fonts.google.com/knowledge/choosing_type/adding_fonts_to_google_docs
And a greater list of IBM Plex fonts: https://fonts.google.com/?query=ibm+plex

Has there been any movement?

We just had a rebranding and only one of the now official company fonts are in Google Fonts. So to be able to use both the fonts we have to create slides, documents etc outside of the google workspace which is counter productive and just simply silly.

@RicoBWGM I am not aware of any plans to integrate fonts besides the fonts available at fonts.google.com.  -KAM

Alright, would be great to have more flexibility there. Especially for a
service that it targeted for businesses. But thank you for your reply.

Best regards,

Rico

@RicoBWGM Just telling you that my experience and my understanding is that there are no plans for that. I would recommend you embrace Google and select fonts from fonts.google.com for your style guide. -KAM

That would've been nice to know 21k ago, before we had the whole rebranding done.

@RicoBWGM that is a good point and one you might want to bring up with your branding company. Especially if you told them that you were using the branding guidelines with Google workspace. The handling of fonts is nothing new there.

Perhaps they were inexperienced and you can ask them to revisit the font portion using families on fonts.google.com at no additional cost.
