Admin to change display name for user across an organization

I had an old user in my organization named "Sally Smith" with the email address "sally@domainname.com". Rather than retiring that email address forever, I repurposed it for a new user in our workspace named "Sally Jones". Unfortunately, anyone in my workspace who has ever emailed old Sally Smith may have this old name cached in their system. So even when they are intending to email Sally Jones, the display name is autocompleted to "Sally Smith" in the display name. I learned that there is no way for me to override that for all users in my workspace/organization so that the correct last name shows up for everyone. Right now, each individual user needs to update the name in their contacts, which is tedious. Can we add a function so that the Admin can update the display name for an email address for all users within an organization?

More than likely the original sally@ is now in most peoples other contacts.  There is a setting in gmail to automatically add people you email with to other contacts so they will show up in autocomplete.

I would check the corporate directory in your contacts just to make sure original Sally is not still there.

You can use Google Apps manager to delete a contact for users.  Originally I thought it was just other contacts but it looks like you may be able to delete the contact by name anywhere.

Install advanced Gam using the below steps:

https://taming.tech/installing-gamadv-xtd3-on-windows-10/

Once it is done use the below commands:

gam all users delete othercontacts emailmatchpattern user@domain.com

gam all users delete contacts emailmatchpattern user@domain.com

this will delete the user contacts from all users such that you can start over.
