So this new feature to Assign Tasks from within Docs was announced back in mid-August, but has yet to appear in our domains. Does anyone else have this feature yet?
ref: Workspace Updates: Easily assign Tasks from Google Docs
Even with the max 15 day rollout, everyone on Workspace domains should have this feature by now, Oct. 11.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hallelujah! ๐ It's working for my domains too!
Are you on the non-profits subscription?
I was in touch with Google Support with this exact question a couple of weeks ago, and they said that the feature was not yet live on the non-profits subscription type - but would be 'within a few days'.
But nothing yet! I'm also VERY keen to get access to this feature. And now I'm quite hesitant about trusting launch dates as it turns out some subscription types might get excluded without notice or explanation.
I can appreciate the complexity of deploying a new feature to myriad domains of various editions, but I cannot abide being kept in the dark by Google. It would be very helpful to at least have updated rollout information, so I don't have to keep a long list of coming features that I need to check on and help my users when the features actually reach our domains!
Announcement definitely said all editions are supported.... but beware: It's internal-only - so somewhat less useful than expected, and particularly confusing/challenging when you have both internal and external collaborators in a Doc (some tasks can be assigned, others can't).
So frustrating. Seems arbitrary to limit it to internal use.
Hoping to boost visibility on this.
Licensing says to Google Workspace domains
But running into an issue with the feature not appearing in some of our test Google Workspace for Education domains. Trying to access the article in google support documentation yields the following message.
Is Google Workspace for Education excluded from "All Workspace Customers"?
I've had a few chat and phone conversations with Google Support about this over the past several weeks - it seems that a team somewhere is working on deploying this function for non-profits, but there's no firm deadline.
My concerns are:
Anyone heard any different?
Thanks, Keenan
I'll see if I have any luck on my end and will report back.
Any update on when this feature might launch for non-profit edu domains?
On Nov 23rd this was the last update to our request to Google.
-----------
Kindly find the update from engineering team:
This feature is currently being worked on. It should be restored in a few days.
------------
Maybe a few days is a month? Holding on to it as a Christmas gift to everyone.
After the holiday break I will re-open the request if it is still not available.
any update on this?
Working perfectly on my domain.

This is what we receive as well when we go to the support doc for this. We just created an issue for this today with Google support. We will let you know if we hear anything different.
I had also provided feedback in this support article. https://support.google.com/docs/answer/12048749?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&oco=1
If you go to the article and hover your cursor on the border beside where it says your email address isn't a workspace account an icon appears to provide feedback for errors and inaccuracies. I did this a few weeks ago.
I am getting the same message as well
It is also not available on our Google Workspace for Education Domain either.
Be aware: You can only assign tasks in docs to internal users, not to external collaborators (regardless of whether they're viewers, commenters or editors on the document in question). Major oversight!
Thanks for confirmation. This is just silly. Spent 45 minutes banging my head against the wall over this.
Really hope they update this soon, it's a useless feature without the ability to assign external users.
Is this still the case? If so, I agree with @Audra1125 . The inability to assign external users is a severe limitation. We need to be able to assign to our clients.
Well it's now December 2022 ... and the feature has yet to deploy to our (nonprofit) domains.
It's now January 2023 ... and the feature has yet to show up in our nonprofit Workspace domain.
Be aware: You can only assign one person to a task. Whereas, in "Comments" you can assign multiple people. Major oversight! Task are often assigned to multiple people to work together to complete the task. How do we get this added to the backlog for Google?
You might want to post this to the Feature Ideas section here. Doing so will allow it to be upvoted by others and possibly considered as a future feature enhancement.
If you do not already have access, you need to request it first. See https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/custom/page/page-id/Workspace-Feature-Ideas-FAQ for how to do that.
Once you have access, go to https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/Feature-Ideas/gh-p/workspace-ideas-group . There, you can upvote and comment on any similar idea, or post a new idea.
If you are submitting a feature idea, be sure to explain the problem that you're trying to solve with the feature idea, not just the idea itself. For example, saying "when my users are trying to do 'A', they often get confused by the fact that the buttons to do 'X' and to do 'Y' look quite similar to each other, which leads to this unintended consequence" is far more likely to get fixed than a feature idea that just says "change the color of the button 'Y'".
Cheers,
Ian
Thank you. I just requested access to the "Features and Enhancements"

Hey @VickiMaloney
Any updates on this feature? I would also want to assign multiple users to a task
No updates yet.
Did you try entering multiple tasks on the doc, and assigning one to each user?
@christiannewman, yes you can do that, but that isn't want I need. I need to be able to assign the same task to two people because they are working on it together.
Very odd that this is working for me on mobile on my Google Workspace for Education Plus account (see screenshot) but not at all on desktop across multiple accounts.
Same!!! I just found this out now you mentioned it...but my desktop & laptop says that I do not have a workspace account...
Wow - -just discovered the same on my mobile device. How odd. I can see the assignment in Docs on the web (desktop/laptop), but I can't add or change assignments.
There's some evidence that Google Workspace for Education editions are starting to see the feature!

It is working for us!!! Beyond excited to finally share this feature with people!!๐
Finally working for us now, too! โจ
Hallelujah! ๐ It's working for my domains too!
I am still unable to use this functionality on our domain. Happy that you all are seeing it appear!
Same here...I keep looking and hoping, but its just not working yet. (We are a non-paying Google for Ed district, so maybe they are prioritizing those that give them $).
Sadly it still does not work on our EDU domain on desktop. It does work on mobile app. Starting a doc on a mobile app with an assigned checklist only carries forward minimal functionality when opened on desktop. Google... please respond to our technitions outreach on this issue.
Hello,
I know it has been a while, but we are know facing the same problem. Tasking from Docs is working on mobile version but not on the web version.
How was your problem solved. Kindly share ๐
