Feature Request: Scheduled Duration for Gmail Workspace Email Forwarding

Note : Crafter by GenAI

Hello Google Cloud Community,

As a Google Workspace administrator, I frequently manage requests to enable email forwarding for former employees. These requests often specify a limited duration for the forwarding period.

Currently, the Gmail email forwarding settings require manual intervention for removal. This necessitates the creation of separate reminders to disable forwarding at the designated time, introducing potential inefficiencies and risks of oversight.

Feature Request:

I propose the implementation of a feature within the Google Workspace Admin console that allows administrators to define a specific duration (in days) for email forwarding at the time of configuration. Ideally, this would be integrated into the email forwarding settings interface, enabling the automatic termination of forwarding after the set period.

Use Case:

This functionality would enhance the efficiency of managing offboarding processes and improve the reliability of email forwarding management by eliminating the need for manual follow-up and reducing the potential for prolonged, unintended forwarding.

I would appreciate any insights into existing solutions or the potential for such a feature in future updates.

Thank you for your consideration.

You can do this with the free, open source, command-line, indispensable GAM tool. Check out:

for more details.

Specifically, see https://github.com/GAM-team/GAM/wiki/Users-Gmail-Forwarding (and then you could schedule the GAM command to discontinue forwarding using a cronjob or similar.)

Hope that helps,

Ian
