Google Authenticator code

We require 2-factor authentication to ensure the security of our users' accounts. While some have used Duo or other authenticator apps to generate a code, end-users recently reported that they cannot sign in using the code they set up with other authentication apps. Google may have changed our system without our knowledge, forcing users to use the Google Authenticator app.

I would not be surprised if the two step verification methods would be based upon what Google outlines in https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185839. For specifically Workspace 2 step verification, there should be a way to allow users other things that are not codes via the Authenticator app such as security keys, backup codes, and Google prompts according to https://support.google.com/a/answer/9176657

@Penelope Is it possible to disable the Security Key and Passkey options while keeping 2-step verification for Google Workspace accounts?

So sorry for the delayed answer here. I actually don't know but maybe the Workspace support via the admin console would know or the Workspace admin help community on the support.google.com platform. I will do some research for you as well to see if I can find anything useful for you.

Quick preliminary research shows that according to https://support.google.com/a/answer/175197, admins can chose the second verification technique since it says: When you set up 2-Step Verification, you choose the second verification step for your users.

So that might mean if you get to chose that second step then it means all the other techniques are automatically not allowed to be used.

Found https://support.google.com/a/answer/917665.

You and your users play important roles in setting up 2-Step Verification (2SV). Your users can choose their 2SV method, or you can enforce a method for certain users or groups in your organization. For example, you can require a small team in Sales to use security keys.

Honestly sounds unrelated to original author's question. If your account is workspace then get the admin involved and write your own post in this community otherwise ask the Google accounts community for help at https://support.google.com/accounts/thread/new?hl=en.
